It seems that no matter how artists try and customize Instagram, their artistic freedom is always contrained by the firm itself.

We considered the different types of limits that Instagram.

After reading the Community Rules of the firm and interviewing a digital designer, we summed them up in five main points.

Instagram imposes technical constraints on the user as part of the design of its platforms.

These limitations are : the posting format, the limited filters, the time-constraints of "Stories," pictures that are posted on the feeds in chrnological order... To go further on this question, you can have a look at the designer Geoffrey Dorne's interview.

Instagram has a tacit licence of use on every content posted on the platform.

We do not claim ownership of your content, but you grant us a license to use it.You hereby grant to us a non-exclusive, free, transferable, sublicense, and worldwide license to host, use, distribute, modify, perform, copy, play or publicly present, translate and create works derived from your content (in accordance with your privacy and application settings).

Intellectual property: On Instagram, everyone can share what is yours.

Content others share or reshare about you. You should consider who you choose to share with, because people who can see your activity on our Products can choose to share it with others on and off our Products, including people and businesses outside the audience you shared with. For example, when you share a post or send a message to specific friends or accounts, they can download, screenshot, or reshare that content to others across or off our Products, in person or in virtual reality experiences such as Facebook Spaces.

Instagram refuses nudity, even if artistic or creative.

We realize that sometimes people want to share artistic or creative nudity images, but for a lot of reasons, we do not allow nudity on Instagram.

Instagram leads the game

Not feeling limited when it comes to customizing Instagram could be intepreted as a proof of the limitations of customization : One would thus remain in the framework of customization that is defined by Instagram and not push back its boundaries. Would that be really creative, then ?
